What is my favorite drink? Without question it is a nice hot cappuccino, made at home from freshly roasted beans. We’ve worked out the process over the years.

The roasting is done with a heat gun and bread machine contraption, the beans are then cooled using a special fan.

We brew the coffee using an Aeropress, we’ve done it that way for over 30 years. Trivia: The Aeropress is from the makers of the Aerobee, a Frisbee-like device that used to be popular but got stuck in trees really easily.

The foam and milk for the drink come from an Instant Pot frother. It does hot and cold froth. It’s a bit of a miraculous device, the cappuccinos I get from the Aeropress and the frother are totally legit.

The milk matters too. I use Fairlife whole milk. Fairlife is ultra-filtered, which increases the percentage of protein. It is a rich and creamy milk that is highly complementary to cappuccinos. For sweetening, I use a single Splenda. I used to use agave syrup but wanted to cut out those calories.

The beans come from all over the world. We order them from Smokin Beans and also an independent store called Sweet Marias. Some of our favorites are Sumatran, Mocha Mattari Yemen, and Tanzanian Peaberry.

The only downside to having a near-perfect cappuccino on demand is it has made me a bit of a snob. On the road, I am overly aware of when I get a badly made cappuccino and it makes me a bit sad, because it is not so tough to make a really good one!

Another favorite is iced coffee, but that is obviously more seasonally dependent. But it is easy to make with the Aeropress because the Aeropress makes concentrated coffee, which you then dilute with water. For regular coffee, you use hot water but for iced, you can use cold water. This is the same reason it works to make cappuccinos with the Aeropress, the fact it makes an almost-espresso.

And if all else fails, no time to make coffee, I’ll grab a Diet Coke out of the fridge. When you run on caffeine, sometimes you’ll take it any way you can get it!
